The St Augustine Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley Tour, Explained

What the 22-stop loop covers, how the 1-day and 2-day tickets differ, the landmarks you'll pass, and how to get the most out of a day in America's oldest city.

The first thing you notice about St. Augustine from the trolley window is how much is packed into how little space. The oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States — settled by Spain in 1565, more than forty years before Jamestown — has been layering history on top of itself for over 450 years, and the result is a walkable, narrated mile or so of forts, colonial houses, cobblestone lanes, and waterfront scenery that repays a slow, multi-stop approach. The hop-on hop-off trolley tour is built exactly for that: a 22-stop loop through the historic district you can ride in full or dip into selectively, at whatever pace suits you.

This is a guide to that trolley ticket — what the route covers, how the 1-day and 2-day options work, which stops deserve the longest detours, and how to book.

What the trolley ticket covers

Every ticket includes the same core: unlimited boarding at any of the 22 stops across St. Augustine’s historic district, a fully narrated tour from your conductor, and admission to the St. Augustine History Museum at Stop 1 (167 San Marco Ave). The narration mixes history, local trivia, and genuine storytelling — the conductors on Old Town Trolley tours have been working this circuit long enough to know which details stick.

The loop takes roughly 90 minutes to complete without hopping off. With stops, most visitors spend a full day — morning on the trolley getting oriented, afternoon on foot at the sites that interest them most, then back aboard to fill in the gaps.

The trolley is St. Augustine's native transport: a century of sightseeing compressed into a 22-stop loop around the oldest city in America. Field Notes · Issue 01

The 22 stops: what to linger at

The full stop list spans the entire historic district, but a few are worth an extended visit:

  • Stop 1 — Old Town Trolley Welcome Center / St. Augustine History Museum (167 San Marco Ave): Start here for the full narrated loop and your museum entry. The Old Jail and the Oldest Store Museum Experience are within walking distance.
  • Stop 4 — City Gates / St. George Street (1 St. George Street): The original colonial fortification gates open onto St. George Street — a pedestrian-only historic mall lined with boutiques, galleries, and colonial-era buildings. The Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse is steps away.
  • Stop 5 — Castillo de San Marcos (20 S. Castillo Dr): The 17th-century Spanish stone fort on the waterfront is the most dramatic landmark on the route. Allow at least an hour.
  • Stop 10 — Lightner Museum / Flagler College (80 Cordova St): Henry Flagler’s 1888 Ponce de León Hotel is now Flagler College; the Alcazar Hotel across the street is now the Lightner Museum. Both are worth a walk.
  • Stop 22 — Fountain of Youth (11 Magnolia Ave): The last stop on the loop — the archaeological park where Ponce de León reportedly landed in 1513. You can actually drink from the spring.

1-day vs 2-day: which to choose

The choice is simple. If you’re spending one day in St. Augustine and want to see as much as possible:

  • 1-day ticket: Unlimited rides from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM on a single calendar day. Ideal if you have a focused itinerary or a half-day to spare.
  • 2-day ticket: The same unlimited loop access across two consecutive days. Best if you want to linger at multiple stops, return to a site you rushed through, or explore the neighborhoods more thoroughly without watching the clock.

Both options include museum entry, the narrated tour, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before your visit.

Practical details

Hours: Trolleys run daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with departures approximately every 15 to 20 minutes. On July 4th, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Eve, service closes at 3:00 PM. The trolley does not operate on Christmas Day.

Accessibility: Most regular-sized collapsible strollers can be accommodated — they must stay with your party and cannot be left unattended. Pets, smoking, luggage, and alcohol are not allowed aboard.

Getting there: Start at Stop 1 — 167 San Marco Ave — for the full narrated experience, or board at any stop on the route. Parking in the historic district can be limited and expensive; the trolley removes that problem entirely.

When to go

St. Augustine is a year-round destination. Spring and fall offer comfortable temperatures (60s–70s°F) and manageable crowds. Summer is hot and humid but busy with families. Winter is the local favourite: mild days, thin crowds, and the full historic-district atmosphere without the peak-season queues. The trolley is covered but open-sided, so a light layer helps on cooler mornings.

The ticket is available year-round and can be reserved in advance — which is worth doing during spring break, summer, and the December holiday season when the historic district fills up. Book your start date, keep free cancellation as your safety net, and arrive ready to board.

"We had Brett for our tour. He was great. We got on late around 2 pm so we had just enough time to go on the whole tour but not hop off. Because it was christmas week it was very crowded. So the next day we got to walk around. Brett was awesome and full of information. We would deff recommend this tour, just start early so you have you have time to get off and explore. If you are a history person you need 2 days for sure"
